Fifteen things About Spring to Get Excited About

I don't know about you...but I'm getting cabin fever!  It's March 8th, and I can't wait for the spring.  I decided to make a list of things that get me excited about SPRING!

1. Flip Flops: Don't you LOVE putting those boots away and taking out the comfy, cozy flip flops?  My toes are always happy in flip flops.  My favorite flip flops are havaianas!

2. Birds Singing in the Morning:  The best sign of spring is leaving for work in the morning and hearing the birds singing.  It puts me in a great mood!

3. Fresh vegetables and fruits from the garden:  Planing a garden for home-grown fruits and vegetables is an awesome way to get excited for warmer weather.  I love home grown vegetables. If where you live doesn't allow you to have a garden, then see #4!

4.  Farmer's Markets: Farmer's markets are another exciting thing to look forward to!  Locally grown fruits, vegetables and other homemade goods are sold at these markets.  The veggies just taste different when they're grown at home!

5. Flowers Blooming: Don't you just love the colors of spring?  (I don't love the pollen that goes along with it...but that's ok, I'll take the sniffles with the warmth!)

6. Cooking on the Grill: There's nothing like that first grilled hamburger of the season!  I love cooking on the grill.  Food just tastes better in the warmer months!

7. It gets darker later: As much as I hate losing an hour of sleep, it makes me happier that at 6:30pm it's still light out!

8. The smell of rain: Do you know what I'm talking about?  Just before a rainstorm comes you can smell rain in the air.  The thunderstorms are coming...I'll take that over snow any day!

9. Putting away the winter clothes: Dig out your shorts, capris, short sleeves and tanks!  We can wear sundresses again and sandals!

10. Pedicures:  My bi-weekly regimen of pedicures will begin again.  My toes and feet are so much happier when they're flip-flop ready!

11. Opening the windows: Let the fresh air and the breeze in...ahhh!!

12. Iced Coffee: In the spring I switch to drinking iced coffee.  It's refreshing in the warm weather!

13. Sitting outside al fresco: Who doesn't love grabbing a table outside in the fresh air?!

14. Exercising outside: Wether it's just taking a walk or going for a run, being outside beats running on the treadmill any day!

High Five for Friday: My brother-in-law, Kevin, ROCKS!

Amanda and I particpate in the link party, High Five for Friday, from Lauren Elizabeth's blog. Head on over to Lauren Elizabeth for more "High Five for Friday." We're taking part in this fun reflection each week and hopefully you will too!

I am SO happy Friday is finally here. Friday, I really do love you. My favorite parts of this week:

1. Weekend love with family. I started last Saturday off visiting my brother and talking with him about new business opportunities. He has launched two successful businesses in the last two years and he inspires me in more ways than you can imagine. He really rocks. Enough said. We also celebrated my sister's birthday last Saturday night at her house in New Jersey. I live for these days/nights and look forward to them all week. In my eyes, there's nothing like spending time with family and being surrounded by them. I soaked up every second of our family time together.

2. My one-of-a-kind brother-in-law. He's earning his way to a full-post solely about him. In the meantime, this guy deserves a spot on the "High Five for Friday" list. Inspired by his New Years Eve dance-off, we created a group version of the Harlem Shake on Saturday night in their basement. He's the mastermind behind the whole thing and an expert at editing the film. Here's a snapshot of the clip, which my sister has begged me not to post. We had fun dressing up. Check out my brother-in-law, Kevin, as he dances with a mask and a panda-shaped pillow. He also created a time lapse of our family night. More about that later. HE ROCKS! I'm sure you have 1,000 questions about this picture...

3. Face Time with Rosie on her birthday. Rosie's birthday was Wednesday and although I dedicated a blog post to her, I couldn't wrap up my week without mentioning our fun Face Time chat Wednesday night. It really stinks not having them live closer to us, for so many reasons, but Face Time is the best invention ever to help fix that situation.

4. A week of "light dinners." I've blogged about balancing the stress of cooking and cleaning every night. I'm not fulfilling my housewife duties very well. Womp-womp. This week we decided to go light on dinners each night and it felt so good. Not a lot of prepping, cooking, or cleaning up.

5. Being featured on Creative-Geekery and Fry Sauce and Grits. The best part of my week! As you know, Amanda and I take part in link parties each week and we were FEATURED ON BOTH yesterday! My post about #100daysofhappy was featured on Creative-Geekery and Amanda's post about Being Kind was featured on Fry Sauce and Grits. We were both shocked and soooo happy! What an honor! Thank you, Creative-Geekery and Fry Sauce and Grits!

High Five for Friday!! A Week of Awesome

Dawn and I particpate in the link party, High Five for Friday, from
Lauren Elizabeth's blog. Head on over to Lauren Elizabeth for more "High Five for Friday." We're taking part in this fun reflection each week and hopefully you will too!

1. Two naps after school: This week was a rough one!  This was the second full work week in a row since November.  In addition, I had open house this week.  Getting home at 8:30 pm on Wednesday night really threw my schedule for a loop!  Yesterday I came home from school, put down my bags and turned the TV on.  I decided to lie down on the couch for just ten minutes...and two hours later I woke up! The same thing happened today! I guess my body is craving rest and sleep.  I love taking afternoon naps...do you?  The kids really have me going all day long, and preparing for state testing has me worn out!!

2. Origami Owl Party Orders Arrived: They're HERE!!! Girls who ordered from my last party, your lockets have arrived and will be delivered next week!  I put everything together tonight and each piece came out so beautiful.  It's wonderful how each locket is completely personal and tells about each woman's life.  I love my job!! Check out my website to see new and exciting ideas (The spring line debuts March 17!!!): Origami Owl

3. Open House: I love Open House!  I don't love staying at work so late, but once everyone arrives, it's so nice to see the parents and the kids appreciating all the hard work we have done.  I have been teaching third grade for 5 years now, and former students are sure to stop by.  I had a few students from 5 years ago stop by, and I can't believe how grown up they look!  They're seventh graders, and most of them are taller than I am!!

The photo above is of the take home projects students completed for the month of February.  The students researched a Civil Rights Leader, and created an informational folder on the leader of their choice.  All third grade teachers were super impressed with the final copy!  We wanted to display them, but since our school used to be a middle school and a high school, we don't have bulletin boards in the hallway!  The grade level brainstormed, and we decided to use thick string to display the projects on the lockers.  It worked out, and came out amazing!  Our hallway never looked better!

The project came from the AMAZING Common Core units of Debbie Crockett, which can be found in her Teachers Pay Teachers Store.  If you're a third grade teacher, you must check out her units!  I'll be sure to dedicate a whole entire post to her eventually, in the meantime, if you're curious, go here: Crockett's Classroom

4. A Full Week of Squats: OMG.  Tonight was 60 squats.  I've made it through one week of squats, and I'm not giving up now.  My legs are sore, but I know it will be worth it.  I've seen some incredible before and after photos on Pinterest!  I found this Ryan Gossling photo and I had to share it with you.  He's true motivation. ;)

5. Cooking a Meal for Marc: Last Saturday was my chance to show off my culinary skills to Marc.  As you know, he set the bar super high when he made me dinner on Valentine's Day.  I promised him that I'd make him dinner, and I think I impressed him.  I started the night off with one of my favorite appetizers, Crostini with Sun-Dried Tomato Jam, a Giada De Laurentiis recipe that is a family favorite.  He LOVED this and was telling me not to make dinner because it was so good and he could eat just that all night!  I ignored him and kept cooking!  Then I served a salad with arugula, gorgonzola cheese and walnuts with a balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing.  Finally, I served another Giada De Laurentiis favorite, Linguine with Chicken Ragu.  Everything was SUPER delicious, and everything was served with Smith & Hook's Cabernet Sauvignon. Tomorrow night is Marc's turn to cook again...can't wait to see what he has on the menu!

Foam Roller: A Life Saver

It's day 6 of my 31 Day Squat Challenge and OMG my thighs are killing me!  Prior to getting into this squat challenge, Marc introduced me to the foam roller.  I complained of tight hip flexors and muscle aches, and he showed me how to use this amazing, simple invention.  You use the roller on your sore muscles which allows them to relax.  You can find how-to videos all over YouTube which explain how to use the roller properly.

I found my roller at TJ Maxx for $9.99.  It's super cheap and well worth getting it!  I have been using it on my thighs, and my muscles feel so much more relaxed.  I will let you know that when you apply pressure to those muscles it HURTS, but after a short amount of time, the muscle will relax and you will feel so much better.  You should try it out!

Here are a few videos to demonstrate how the roller works:

Happy foam rolling!!

Dawn and I are taking part in another link party tonight... THE Pin It Party Pinterest Linkup. We found this link party through the Creative Geekery blog and are excited to take part in this each Thursday!!

Humans of New York: For Teachers! {MUST SEE!}

A month ago, I learned about Humans of New York and I blogged about it immediately. I now follow HONY on Instagram and Twitter and truly look forward to seeing Brandon's updates each day. If you haven't checked out HONY yet, what are you waiting for?! At least follow him on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, and I promise you'll be pleasantly surprised one day. Make your way over there now...

I have to admit that I love each. and. every. post. The stories that Brandon captures and then tells in just a few words are uplifting, charming, captivating, and in most cases, very moving.

Lately, I've been noticing a few portraits that have focused on students and teachers. It's so easy to lose sight of the effect that we have on our students. These photos reminded me of how important we are:

And how could I come to the end of this post without the mention of an adorable kid? Check her out...

Thanks for the love and for showcasing teachers, HONY. Do yourself a favor and follow him tonight, you'll be happy you did! I love New York.

This video is found on HONY'S About Us page.

An Unexpected Note

Any teacher can relate to this.  You work...and work...and work.  You drag yourself out of bed in the morning, go into school to teach a full day of lessons.  With the pressures of state testing coming down the pike in just less than a month, we're all maxed out stress-wise.  Overwhelmed.  Exhausted.  Spread thin.

Tonight we had open house.  The night where the kids take their parents into school and the classroom to show off their hard work.  It's a nice night to see all the moms and dads following their little ones around, oohing and ahhing at all their work.  My students have honestly worked the hardest they have probably ever worked in their entire lives over the past few months, so the night and praise was well-deserved.

As I was preparing for my visitors to arrive in the classroom, I was taking down chairs, straitening desks and putting the final touches on the classroom when I came across this note.  It was written by a student to her mother.  The note wasn't about how hard she worked, or how clean her desk was...it was about me. This particular student's note made me stop and realize that my job is much more than a test..or data points...or anything else that has no real measure for what my job is really like.

Each day teachers play a million different roles.  We do our best to be there for each and every child.  We're sensitive to each and every child's needs, and we make decisions every second of every day based upon those needs.  Wether this student knows it or not, she helped me to realize that my job is still as important as ever...and the kids need us. They need us to be exactly who we are, and to be there for them just as we always have.

The true gift was at the end of this note, it said: "P.S.: I love school now! :)"

Thank you, my dear, for helping me love my job.  xo

goodnight.

Happy Birthday Rosie: Every girl should have a big sister like YOU!

Today is my sister’s birthday and I have to say that I can’t imagine my life without her... my big sister

I've learned so many valuable lessons over the years from her..and even though I'm nearing 30, she still continues to teach me new things and inspires me in so many ways. I worshiped her when I was a little girl and I still continue to idolize her today.

Having a sister is a precious luxury. She will always be that person that you can share your deepest secrets with. You can always count on her to be there to share the difficult mountains that you may have to climb and those surprising moments of joy. She’s almost always the first one I call crying and she always says, in her most calm and sincere voice, “Dawn, don’t worry, it’s going to be ok.”

Every girl should have a big sister like her.

A birthday is just another excuse to tell your sister why she will always be your favorite person. Here are some reasons why having a sister, like Rosie, is the greatest gift in the world:

-Since I was born, my sister has been my best friend, my inspiration, my strength. I wanted to be like her and copied everything she did. She hated it. I was her shadow. ;)

-She’s my mirror shining back at me with a world of possibilities and always encourages me when I need it most.

-She’s my witness who sees me at my worst, but loves me anyway. She gives me strength when I feel down and pushes me to accomplish everything.

-She’s my partner in crime, my midnight companion, and knows when I’m smiling, even in the dark.

-She teaches me to keep an open mind, to see the best in people, and to enjoy the small things, always.

-She's my teacher, my defense attorney, my personal press agent, and even my shrink.

There's no better friend than a sister, and no better sister than you!!

Happy Birthday, Ro! I love you so much!!!

Music definitely sets the tone for my day! Two songs I'm loving right now...

It's amazing how music is such a huge part of our lives. Most of us hear or listen to it nearly every day and it greatly affects the  mood we're experiencing. I'll never forget working at the Gap when I was in high school. They stressed the importance of playing upbeat, positive, and fun music for customers to listen to; it makes people happy and they want to stay and shop more! Have you ever paid attention to this when shopping? Music is a powerful tool!

Music definitely sets the tone for my day. I love listening to music and incorporate it into my day whenever possible. If I'm at home, I'll listen to music when I'm cooking, cleaning, or grading papers. I always listen to music when I'm in the car, on my way to work and on my way home. I also listen to it in school. Sometimes, I have it playing when the kids walk into my classroom in the morning. I have it on during my prep period, as well. The genre of music that I listen to often varies depending on the mood I'm in.

I'm sure you have "go-to" songs that lift you up and make you insanely happy. Two songs that are very popular right now and that I love listening to are: Happy by Pharrell Williams and Best Day of My Life by American Authors. They both turn my mood around completely. Irritable to happy. Happy to happier! :-) I'm hearing these more and more on the radio now, which is awesome! Both songs came on in the classroom the other day and the kids could barely contain themselves. :-)

What songs are you loving right now?

Happy Fat Tuesday: What are YOU giving up?

Happy Fat Tuesday! The night before Ash Wednesday.  This year, I'm asking you to think about your life, and try to give up ONE thing for Lent?  Some years, I go all out, and others I forget to give up anything.  This year, I'm actually giving up two things.  Two things I love more than most other things (not people...just things...):  CARBS and SHOPPING.

I think the second will be a whole lot HARDER than the first.  I'm determined to spend the next 40 days doing other things than stopping in the store for new clothes (which I sure do not need).  TJ Maxx is my guilty pleasure.  Instead, I'm going to save my money and live off the pretty things that are already hanging in my closet.

You know I've begun the T25 Workout, as well as the 31 Day Squat Challenge.  This is the next challenge I give myself.  I want to lose weight, and the only way it is going to work is if I cut out all the stuff that's bad for me.  I know I can do it.  I apologize to all starting from now: I'm going to be cranky at times.  I really, really don't mean it.

What are you giving up?  Make the commitment in the comments section below.  I'll be sure to update you on how things are going throughout the month.  Who's with me?

Planning a Baby Shower: Invitations

I love party planning! From choosing the very first ideas, to throwing away the last speck of wrapping paper, it's something that excites me!  One of the most important parts of party planning is choosing the invitations.  Many people go the cheap route because "they just go in the garbage anyway," but I say don't skimp on this part of the process!

There are many different places where you can go for invitations, but there are a few websites I'm going to highlight for you tonight.  When I planned my sister's baby shower, I scoured the internet until I found the right invitation that went along with the theme and feel of our shower.  I hope these suggestions help!

1. Tiny Prints  If you've heard of Shutterfly, you'll love Tiny Prints.  If you've heard of Wedding Paper Divas, you'll love Tiny Prints.  They're all affiliated with one another!  This is the website I used to order Allyson's baby shower invitations.  I love the fact that the ordering process was easy, they have a preview feature so you can see what your invite will look like before you place your order, and the invites were delivered fast!  There are tons of ideas and designs.  It's a paper lover's paradise!  Here's the design I used for her shower:

2. Minted  For some reason, I am fascinated by this website.  I've seen their products before, and their card stock is like none I've ever seen before.  Their designs are beautiful.  I'm determined to order something from their site eventually.  This is one of my favorite designs for a baby shower:

3. Zazzle  This site has all things personalized.  Their prices are reasonable, and their products are on trend.  Check them out!

4. Paper Style This site also has beautiful, trendy designs.

5. Laura Damiano Designs  If you're looking for an absolute custom look, visit Laura Damiano Designs.  She's local to the Hudson Valley, NY area, but I am sure she'd work with anyone from any location!  Dawn used her for her wedding invitations, and her work is beautiful.  Check out her site!

I hope some of my ideas help you and inspire you to create the baby shower of the Mommy-to-Be's dreams!

Makeup Monday: MAC Mascara

I love MAC products and this mascara is amazing. Hands down, the best I've ever purchased! I purchased this In Extreme Dimension mascara a few weeks ago and it works like a dream! If you're looking for big, bold, lush lashes... then this is the mascara for you!

You get lots of length, separation, and volume and it doesn't look or feel clumpy. My lashes don't feel heavy or weighed down, either. With one quick sweep, you'll obtain a gorgeous, dramatic look in just a few seconds.

In Extreme Dimension is definitely geared to be a soft mascara that adds fullness and definition. I love the spiky brush, it allows me to get almost every single lash easily.

If you're looking for a new mascara, definitely pop into MAC and grab this one!

Spring Home Decor: DIY Banners

Ever since creating my Happy New Year photo booth, I'm kind of in love with DIY banners. As I begin to think about spring decorations, here are four banners that I'm considering to make over the next few weeks. All of these projects are very inexpensive and require very little materials.

1. Paint Chip Easter Garland - I found this adorable idea from Modern Parents Messy Kids blog. I love the idea of using paint chips and have blogged about this before for Valentine's Day. What an easy project and fun for the kids, too! She provides an egg template on her blog post so that they look perfect!

2. Spring Printable Banner - I love the I Heart Naptime blog. She posts so many great DIY project ideas and she always offers free printables, too. This banner caught my eye because of the pinwheels. They look super cute and seem easy to make. The directions to make the pinwheels are here

3. Scrapbook Paper Banner - I love scrapbooking and have so many different types of paper, so this one seemed easy to make too! The DIY Mommy blog posted about this awesome project. There are only a few items that you'll need: string/yarn/twine, glue stick, scissors, ruler, stickers, and of course, scrapbook paper!

4. Easter Bunny Banner - This one is just so cute! Such a fun kids project, too! Again, so very easy with just a few pieces of pretty scrapbook paper. Simply Sprout Educate blog lists a few Easter themed activities for your kids or for the classroom. She also provides a bunny template for easy tracing and cut-outs. The cotton ball for the bunny's tail adds such a cute touch!

Just Be Kind

The idea for this post is one that has been on my mind for quite some time. I'm writing tonight about a serious epidemic that's occurring everyday in our schools.  I see it in elementary school, Dawn talks about it occurring in middle school, and I know it happens in high schools.  I'm talking about the fact that girls are just plain MEAN.  They've been for quite some time, and the way that the female population treats one another is just awful.

This topic really hits home for me, because I was bullied throughout a good part of my school career. I had started elementary school with a good core group of girls from my neighborhood.  We were all pretty close, attending school together, waiting by the bus stop together, and even having play dates.  Once I hit third grade, new girls moved into my neighborhood, and for some reason, they chose to be mean to me.

Thinking back, I'm really not sure why. In elementary school, one girl who lived around the corner, told me that I was "plump." I had another girl and her brother throw oranges at me when I was sitting quietly on the bus minding my own business.  In middle school I found a new group of good girlfriends, and I distanced myself away from the mean girls.  Once I got to high school, I really didn't have the time or energy anymore to pay attention to their stupidity.  I heard that one girl tried to continue to spread rumors about me later in high school.  By that time, I was so over them, and really most of them were jerks to me that I had written them off.

The thing is, now that I'm a grown adult and look back on the bullies, where I am now, and everything in between, it means nothing.  Back then it meant everything.   Now, it means more in my classroom to be sure that all my students know that I have zero tolerance for students being unkind to one another.  It gets us nowhere.  Those girls, I could care less if I have a friendship with them anymore.  In fact, I'm GLAD I stopped trying to be their friends.  They had nothing positive to add to my life.  One of my closest friends who also attended elementary school with me also agreed that she, too, wanted to be friends with those girls.  Now looking back, we can both say that if we could have been inside the walls of those classrooms, we would have pulled our little 9 year old selves aside and said, "Stop trying to be their friends.  Friend's aren't mean to one another. Move on!"

My story is just one of many, and to be honest, it's mild.  Some stories are horrific, and end in self-harm or suicide because young girls just can't handle the pressure of other girls crushing their spirit.  I didn't have to deal with cyber-bullying like the students today have to deal with.  With the push of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and all those other social media sites, kids just can't get a break.

I'd like to introduce you to the Kind Campaign.  I encourage you to visit their website and see what they are all about.  The mission of Kind Campaign is as follows:

An internationally recognized movement, documentary and school program based upon the powerful belief in KINDness, that brings awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl-against-girl “crime.”

They hold screenings of their documentary, "Finding Kind," all over the country in schools for girls, parents and teachers to become educated on how to change the way girls treat one another.  In addition, they have assemblies and school programs that encourage girls to become kinder.  I wish this was around when I was in school. Please visit their website, and if you think that your school or your child's school could benefit from their program, speak to your school's administration.   Here's the trailer for "Finding Kind:"

The other problem is, that ADULTS aren't kind to one another.  I've witnessed multiple times in public and in the workplace, people are so caught up with stress and life, that they don't stop to think about how they are speaking to one another. I've even heard stories about how family members talk to and treat one another.  The things that you say to the people around you are things people won't ever forget.  Don't be remembered for being that way. At the end of it all, wouldn't you want to be remembered as a kind, caring, compassionate person?

I was at a Taylor Swift concert over the summer, and I loved her talk about growing up, bullies and kindness prior to singing the song, "Mean."

(Please try to listen closely past the screams to hear what she says! )

Don't listen through the screams, watch Taylor's Grammy Performance.  I love this version!

Unfortunately, as you grow older, the bullies don't go away.  We're just a little bit smarter on how to spot them and how to deal with them.  I just think if we educate our kids on how to be kinder, our schools will be a much safer, happier place to be.

If you, or someone you know is being bullied, speak to an adult at your school or your child's school. No one should ever endure someone repeatedly picking on them.  It hurts, and it's not necessary.  Let's put a stop to this awful, mean girl epidemic.

If you're a bully, or you've bullied someone in the past, it's never too late to apologize for your mean, unnecessary behavior.  Just sayin'.

Wishing you all a fantastic, bully-free week!  Find it somewhere in your heart to just be kind. xo

Humans of New York: For Teachers! {MUST SEE!}

Find it somewhere in your heart to just be kind. xo
